Navigational design of computer-based learning environmentsTopic: Hypermedial learning environments have a large potential for self-centered learning. However, empirical studies show that when working with hypermedial learning environments students do have problems in using the potential of these learning environments. In complex learning environments the mental effort for navigation and orientation in the data universe, which is no longer there for adopting the actual contents, is to be reduced to a minimum. Navigation is therefore a key problem when dealing with complex learning and information systems. Loss of orientation, cognitive overloading and ineffective learning strategies often lead to superficial information processing and a lack of coherence of the entity´s mental representation. The means of orientation and navigation used so far in hypermedial learning environments seem to be limited for supporting effective, self-centered learning and in-depth information processing. Goals: A prototypical learning environment will be examined on how far and by which means of navigation design self-centered constructive cognitive processes of knowledge aquisition and problem solving can be supported. Navigational design should not only be concerned with realizing technical means of navigation, but also with flexible and functional structuring and presentation of information. In doing this, a navigation interface founded on individual cognitive conditions and orientated towards individual interests and goals can be planned and implemented. Working program: The project will be to develop a complex learning envoironment whose components are prepared hypermedially, as mentioned above. As a foundation for this we will use material dealing with the use of new media in distance education (see Project STIMULATE), as well as the program Navigator (Lechner, 1994) which has numerous variants of navigation available. In partial implementations of the material specific means of navigation will be examined. Contact Person: Dr. Joachim Wedekind
